About Us

Women of Substance of Delaware Valley, Inc. was founded on April 18, 2015, by nine strong and visionary women who believed in the power of unity, purpose, and service. What began as a small but determined group has grown into a thriving nonprofit organization committed to empowering women, supporting young girls, and uplifting families in need both locally and internationally.

For over 11 years, the organization has remained focused on creating real impact through education, mentorship, and outreach. Today, Women of Substance has grown to 42 dedicated members who continue to sacrifice their time, strength, and finances to advance the mission while evolving to meet the needs of the communities it serves. Guided by its motto, “Reinventing the Wheel to Success,” the organization continues to turn vision into action.

From its early years, Women of Substance has intentionally focused on supporting young girls in need—particularly those whose parents cannot afford access to education, especially in hard-to-reach and underserved areas of Liberia where teaching and learning conditions can be challenging. This commitment led to the development of its scholarship program, which currently supports approximately 80 girls across five schools with tuition, uniforms, book bags, and school supplies. With a clear goal of expanding to 250 students by 2030, the program reflects the organization’s long-term investment in education and opportunity. This work is strengthened by the dedication of two committed coordinators on the ground, Andrew Diton and Samuel Toe, who continue to ensure the program operates effectively and reaches those most in need.

As part of its continued commitment to improving the lives of these young girls, the organization is also working toward building a playground at the benefit schools. This initiative is intended to create a safe and supportive environment where children can learn, play, and grow, recognizing that development goes beyond the classroom.

Women of Substance has also remained deeply committed to supporting families in need within its local community. Through its annual Thanksgiving Giveaway, the organization provides food and essential items to households, ensuring families experience the holiday with dignity, care, and support.

Throughout its journey, the organization has experienced both growth and loss. Women of Substance honors the legacy of its first beloved President, the late Laura Doe Dixon, whose leadership and vision helped lay the foundation for the organization’s continued success. Her impact remains a guiding force.

The organization has also created meaningful platforms such as the Annual Fashion Show and Queen Contest, which bring people together to celebrate culture, strength, and purpose while raising funds to support its programs. These events highlight the confidence, leadership, and unity of women working together to make a difference.

Through the continued support of sponsors, patrons, volunteers, supporters, and well-wishers, Women of Substance of Delaware Valley, Inc. remains relevant, impactful, and thriving. Its journey reflects resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to empowering women, supporting young girls, and strengthening families—one life and one community at a time.
